3 cats rescued from basement fire in Ann Arbor home

The Ann Arbor Fire Department was called to the duplex home to extinguish the basement fire at 5:30 p.m. Three fire trucks, two police cars and an ambulance blocked off the street.

Ann Arbor Fire Department Lieutenant Matt Schroeder said as of 6 p.m., the department was still unsure as to the source of the fire.

“As of now there’s not cause or origin point,” Schroeder said. “It could be a dryer fire, but we don’t know yet.”

Schroeder added that the firefighters distinguished the flames quickly, and it didn’t appear to be a large fire. He could not, however, assess the damage done to the home.

While all people living in the house evacuated prior to the Fire Department’s arrival, the Fire Department had to rescue pets from the house when they arrived on scene. The pets did not appear to be harmed by the fire.

“We rescued three cats from the house,” Schroeder said. “They seem pretty happy now in their pen.”

The exterior of the house did not look as though it had been damaged in the fire.

The fire was contained in the basement of the house. Damages, as well as origin of the fire, are still being determined.
